Here are some quick solutions to know the tricks
in english grammar.
#1: Run-on Sentences
Run-on sentences are found to be the most common
issue in grammar when asked students. At exam time, you are nervous and in that
nervousness, you filled a sentence with many unnecessary words. Many TOEFL
test-takers have such essays and Speaking responses which are filled with
run-on sentences. These are not only grammatically incorrect, but also they
distract the grader to understand the point you want to make. Remember to pause
every now and then when you are solving Speaking and Writing sections.
These run-on sentences occur when two or more
independent clauses are incorrectly combined into a single sentence. Basics
says that each sentence can have one subject and one verb unless multiple
clauses have been correctly combined. But, running on sentence makes this law
incorrect. So keep calm during exams and avoid this.
#2: make the use of Present (Not Future) Tense
After Time Clauses
This is another common mistake that many
beginners make. Many of them use “will” unnecessarily. This happens mostly
during Speaking responses because you have much less time to think compared to
the thinking time that you get while solving writing questions.
Do not use “will '' to refer to the future in
time clauses. Time clauses are those that begin with a time expression, as, as
soon as, such as when, while, after, until, and before. IMFS suggests to
use present tense, not future.
#3: Defined vs. Undefined Articles
Articles are such small things in English grammar
but can trouble you the most. Basics says that “A” is the indefinite article
which is used in front of general or undefined nouns. “The” is the definite
article which is used for people, places, or things that are “defined” for the
speaker. When you write “the” in front of a noun, you tend to refer to a
specific object that you know. These basics are used in a tricky way in TOEFL
question. With practice, you can be better at solving these questions.
